We gathered for a sweet-themed workshop for whittling hearts just in time for Valentine’s Day, on January 26 & 29, 2026.
Roman Chernikov led the carving session, sharing the quirky history of the heart symbol, how grain direction affects your carving approach, and a step-by-step demo of carving the rounded top, a tricky part when the grain runs vertically. He also showed several simple designs and handed out ready-to-carve basswood blanks, plus ideas for turning finished pieces into fridge magnets or little ornaments.

The room buzzed with energy, with 16 workshop participants. Three newcomers joined the fun and, with Roman’s guidance, started carving their hearts on the spot. Even the seasoned carvers got inspired; David Clarke took the basic shape and sculpted a stylized, lifelike heart that stole the show. By the end of the session, most participants had completed (or nearly completed) their hearts, and the beginner carvers gained much more confidence for their next project.
The atmosphere was relaxed and full of laughter; lovely jokes flew as freely as the shavings, and everyone exchanged compliments on each other’s work. The photo gallery below captures the moment: smiling faces, whittling knives, and proudly displayed, partially-carved hearts.

Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed whittling hearts with us. And a special thanks to Roman for the wonderful teaching and to David for the artistic flourish. Keep an eye on our calendar, more workshops and group projects are coming every couple of months!

Happy carving, and happy Valentine’s Day.
