I really enjoyed Emotions in Wood by Ann Brouwers. It’s not just a book about carving techniques — it actually made me look at faces and emotions in a completely new way. The author has a great eye for how small changes in shape or angle can completely change the feeling of a face.
Her step-by-step explanations are clear, and I like how she connects the technical side of carving with the emotional side. It’s not only about tools and anatomy, but also about how to make your carving “feel alive.”
What I especially liked were the parts where she wrote about the facial expression carvings in the church near her home. Those sections were beautiful and inspiring. I actually wish she had included more of that — more photos and stories about those carvings would’ve been amazing.
Overall, this book really helped me improve, both in technique and in how I think about expression in wood. It’s one of those books that makes you want to pick up your tools right away and start carving again.
