Last November, the club gathered for a “Carving Icicles” workshop led by Roman Chernikov. He presented two beginner-friendly designs: a graceful swirl that can be carved clockwise or counterclockwise, and a Tramp Art-inspired icicle carved from a square dowel. Both projects required only a single tool, a gouge or a knife, so participants quickly mastered the technique, and the room rang with the fresh crackle of shavings.

The result was a set of eight wooden icicles carved from basswood, poplar, and a piece of unknown spalted wood; a few were finished with bright paint. Roman also demonstrated how to add a simple eyelet using a short wire and a handheld drill, turning each piece into a ready-to-hang holiday ornament. The finished collection sparkled on the table, perfect for any tree or mantel.
A special thanks to Dan Brady, David Clarke, and all the members who carved, shared tips, and helped make this chilly workshop a success!
